Are negative beliefs holding you back from reaching your fullest potential?

Do you sometimes feel like it's just too hard, or too late, to change?

If any of this sounds familiar, you need Rewire, your personal guide to understanding the neuroscience of why you are subconsciously programmed to repeat certain habits and how you can do, or undo, any type of behavior to be the person you want to be.

BREAK THE CYCLE, ALTER YOUR THOUGHTS AND CREATE LASTING CHANGE

In clear language, neuroscientist Nicole Vignola demystifies the science of breaking bad habits and how to make good ones, the principles of neuroplasticity, and neurohack methods for changing behavioral patterns. In the end, she helps you to see yourself in a different way and control how you react to any life situation, from overcoming negative, limiting beliefs to managing stress and achieving peak mental wellbeing.

Think of your brain as your hardware and your mental health as your software. Your hardware must work well before you can upgrade your software; Once you learn the fundamentals of rewiring your brain, you can instill new habits, shift your mindset, and change unwanted behavior to create the best version of yourself.

We all have habits and behaviors that hold us back from reaching our fullest potential. This book will help you see that you are not stuck, that you can rewrite your story—and shows you how.

Neuroscientist Vignola debuts with a robust “neuroscientific toolkit” to help readers rework entrenched habits and “subconsciously programmed beliefs we hold about ourselves.” She anchors her approach in the brain’s “ability... to change and adapt” as harmful thought patterns are weakened by disuse and replaced with new synaptic connections. Readers are encouraged to combat chronic stress with breathing exercises; visualize positive outcomes before a meeting or performance (“If you’ve already imagined executing something, then it will be easier to execute”); and increase resilience by believing that one’s abilities “can be developed through dedication, effort and learning.” Vignola expertly translates neuroscientific principles for the lay reader without sacrificing complexity. As a result, even the more obvious stress-reduction tools (sleep, exercise) are enriched with useful context (according to the author, during REM sleep, a drop in norepinephrine aids “the brain’s ability to process emotions and memories without triggering a person’s emotional centres,” helping to reduce “the emotional load of traumatic experiences and intrusive thoughts”). It’s a solid resource for those seeking to lead fuller lives.

Neuroscientist and corporate consultant Vignola's first book is a welcome addition to the emerging field of self-help books that start with a reclaiming of the body's systems. She breaks down neuroplasticity to its most basic form: "repetition + attention + intention = lasting change," and in laying out this clear equation, reassures readers that they can reshape their brains, thoughts, behaviors, and lives. As appealing as this simplicity can be, there's the dangerous trap of oversimplification--even the equation has a touch of good-vibes-only manifestation energy. However, the reframing of fixity to plasticity is one that can and should become a foundational tool in mental health biohackers' toolkits. Some of Vignola's advice--such as sleep more, scroll less--hardly qualifies as groundbreaking, but her overall approach to making neuroscience accessible might empower readers to change their narratives. VERDICT With quotations and references drawn from pop culture set alongside cutting-edge research on neuroplasticity and other facets of cognition, this is an easy-to-read addition to the growing ranks of biohacking books. Will appeal to readers of Tara Swart Bieber and Wendy Suzuki.
