Discover Spiritual Minimalism: the "inside-out" path to getting rid of inner clutter and living a more fulfilled life.
Everywhere you look, people in all walks of life are "going minimalist" and getting rid of their possessions. Yet as exciting as it can be to throw out half of your belongings, does it really bring happiness? As Light Watkins says: "If you're unhappy now, becoming a minimalist isn't likely to change that... unless you do the inner work to cultivate happiness on the inside."
Light is famous for taking minimalism to the extreme—and now lives his whole life out of a single backpack. In Travel Light, he shares his surprising revelation that being a "spiritual minimalist" means you don't focus on material objects. What matters more than clearing out your closets is how much trust you have in your inner guidance. "Spiritual Minimalism is not about how much physical stuff you have," he says. "It's about how you communicate, incorporate service into your life, exercise, cook, clean, and express your love."
Light shares his unique inside-out approach to minimalism using stories, anecdotes, and vignettes, along with real-world experiments and exercises that you can adapt to your own life.
Here you'll learn how to:

  • Prioritize and cultivate inner happiness
  • Make the most important decisions from your heart
  • Get comfortable in the discomfort
  • Live as though there are no throwaway moments
  • Tap in to your curiosity as a gateway to your true path
  • The "freedom of choicelessness"—decluttering your life decisions
You'll be invited to discover the joy of giving what you want to receive; following your curiosity; and living with a "clutter-free" approach to your choices, values, and life purpose. Implementing the principles of Spiritual Minimalism will get you aligned with your values and lead you to a life-changing adventure!

Meditation teacher Watkins (Knowing Where to Look) offers an accessible introduction to spiritual minimalism—a practice that doesn’t require “clearing out your closet” but instead involves accessing one’s inner guidance to release professional, personal, or spiritual burdens. He outlines seven key principles of the approach, including becoming comfortable with discomfort, making decisions “from your heart, not your head,” and cultivating inner happiness. It’s also important, Watkins writes, to appreciate “throwaway” moments such as a fleeting conversation with a stranger—by doing so, “you will start to... appreciate both giving and receiving small gestures of kindness, which will lead to more fulfillment with small things and an overall need for less.” Watkins weaves together mindfulness exercises; personal anecdotes, such as how a breakup and financial pressure spurred him to leave behind his life in Los Angeles and open a meditation practice in New York City; and answers to common meditation queries (readers are reassured, for example, that one should “never chastise your mind for thinking... if you practice celebrating your wandering mind, it will become settled more often”). Watkins’s tone is appealingly conversational, and his lucid prose and easy-to-follow meditation exercises help bring the sometimes abstract contours of spiritual minimalism down to earth. Spiritual seekers of all stripes will enlightened.

Watkins (The Inner Gym) offers fresh insights into meditation, minimalism, and intentional living. Seven principles can serve as a gateway to a lifestyle aligned with one's values and purpose. With an emphasis on prioritizing and cultivating inner happiness and making decisions from the heart's voice, those who embrace uncomplicated meditation and minimalism will find new paths available that could not be seen before. Shedding material possessions is just one suggestion. The larger concept is challenging habits and conventions that conflict with an intentional life. How simply can a person live and what is to be gained from doing so? Curiosity leads to opportunities and connections. Giving what someone wants to receive can manifest that very thing. Once values are clarified, showing up fully in life means eliminating those useless throwaway moments and creating internal space. These principles can require becoming comfortable with discomfort, yet ultimately they simplify one's choices opening up new vistas. Do less, accomplish more, reduce stress, and enjoy the process. VERDICT The principles are not new, but collectively present thoughtful perspective for achieving inner peace and an increased level of personal freedom. For most public libraries.--Gloria Drake
