Holly Martin must find a dangerous sexual offender before he strikes again.

Corporal Holly Martin's small RCMP detachment on Vancouver Island is rocked by a midnight attack on a woman camping alone at picturesque French Beach. Then Holly's constable, Chipper Knox Singh, is accused of sexually assaulting a girl during a routine traffic stop and is removed from active duty. At another beach a girl is killed. An assailant is operating unseen in these dark, forested locations.
The case breaks open when a third young woman is raped in daylight and gives a precise description of the assailant. Public outrage and harsh criticism of local law enforcement augment tensions in the frightened community, but as a mere corporal, Holly is kept on the periphery. She must assemble her own clues.

Corporal Holly Martin, of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, based on Vancouver Island in a remote three-person detachment, is called out when a young woman is assaulted at a local campground. Things escalate when another young woman is attacked and killed at a different campground. Holly completes the initial investigation but is then shut out of the case by her superiors. Complicating matters, her young colleague, Chipper, is accused of sexually assaulting a teen he stopped for speeding, and the RCMP is bending over backward to avoid any criticism of the way his case is handled. When a third woman is raped, she escapes her attacker and is able to provide a detailed description of him. Holly works to clear Chipper of the trumped-up charges against him, and she identifies the rapist, almost dying in the process. Readers who enjoy the small-town, edge-of-the-wilderness British Columbia setting will want to check out Vicki Delany's Molly Smith series, also starring a female investigator.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
