      Julia White recently published a memoir about her mother, who died by suicide. On the three-year anniversary of her mother's death, Julia is working her bartending job in Brooklyn. Her ex-boyfriend, whom she hooked up with after her book-launch party, has been ignoring her texts. When an older man strikes up a conversation, Julia assumes he's just another drunk guy trying to buy her a drink. Instead, it's famous photographer Jonathan Aster, who read her book and wants her to write one for him. He shows her one of his photographs: a woman leaping from a train bridge into a swirling river in Kentucky. Aster wants Julia to uncover the woman's story. The Act of Disappearing follows Julia's contemporary story and a parallel one that begins in 1947, tracing the Fairchild family in Gray Station, Kentucky. From multiple perspectives, Gower considers the evolutions of mental health treatment, hereditary trauma, gender roles, family, and religious fervor. Neatly plotted, if long, his debut novel will also appeal to readers interested in historical fiction and multigenerational epics.
